Sunday, August 19 from 4 to 7 p.m.
A celebration of Latino culture is set for Sunday, Aug. 19, at Central Gardens of North Iowa in Clear Lake. The Garden Fiesta, from 4 to 7 p.m., is an extended Picnics and Performances event for the entire family.
Festivities include kids crafts and activities in the Kids garden, face painting, a pinata for the little ones, salsa tasting, refreshments, an opportunity to have flowers styled in your hair, and a performance by the young Mexican folk dancers, Grupo Folclorico de Hampton.
A special feature will be a performance by Tropicante from 5 to 6 p.m. This four-person Latin ensemble will play lively Mexican and Colombian cumbias, Dominican merengues, Caribbean salsa tunes, contemporary pop tunes, and more. The Des Moines area group has traveled and performed nationally and internationally. It includes lead singer Karin Stein who hails from Colombia, and lead singer and percussionist Ed East from Panama.
The ensemble's lively concerts are sprinkled with first-rate musicianship, anecdotes, and humor.
People may bring picnic lunches or buy food from the Mr. Taco food truck. People are also
encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs, and stay for an evening of fun, entertainment and community building.
Admission is free!
