Mary Woerner of Clear Lake, enjoys gardening as her major hobby, so she spends hours in her flower garden, weeding and transplanting perennials. Because she attended school on the grounds that are now Central Gardens, she was captivated by the idea of turning the area into a public garden. When she retired after many years of teaching nursing at North Iowa Area Community College, she was asked to serve as volunteer Executive Director of the Gardens until a permanent executive director could be secured. Having been on the board for over a decade, she enjoys touring groups through Central Gardens and giving talks about the Gardens to civic and other groups. She also enjoys assisting with the spring plant sale and the summer garden party, as well as grant writing, fund-raising, and helping prepare the periodic newsletter. She was particularly pleased with the addition of three nights of performances of summer theatre last year in the Gardens.
